What is Cyberwarfare?

Cyberwarfare refers to the actual techniques deployed in a cyber war. One or more nation-states make an organised effort to conduct a cyberattack against another state. For example, the Stuxnet attack was a collaborative effort between multiple states to create a cyber weapon that would disrupt the process of nuclear production in Iran.

Example of Cyberwarfare: Georgia Attacks

In August 2008, during the war between Russia and the Republic of Georgia, we witnessed a large scale of overt cyberspace attacks that were relatively well synchronised with the military operations. Fifty-four news, government and financial websites were defaced or denied with an average of Denial of Service lasting about two hours and the longest-lasting six hours. 35% of Georgia’s internet networks stop functioning due to high volume traffic.
